Speaking at SBI's Banking and Economics Conclave, she said the exercise would require extensive groundwork before any formal roadmap is announced."We will have to discuss with RBI its ideas on building larger banks and also engage with banks to see how they want to take this forward. A lot of groundwork is needed before we can say the government is moving in a particular direction, and that work has already begun," she said.Sitharaman emphasised that India's approach should not be limited to expanding existing institutions alone. "We need an ecosystem where more banks can operate and grow - and that environment is already well established in India," she said, addressing questions on whether another round of PSU bank mergers may be coming.Her comments come amid heightened speculation about consolidation in the public-sector banking space and rising foreign investment in private lenders such as Yes Bank, RBL Bank and Federal Bank, where global investors have made strategic, multi-billion-dollar bets.
